Take a Little Trip Up to Heaven Tonight

Gay title I know, but when I was thinkin in my head I had to make the post about our trip, thats what popped into my head...so shoot me alright!

So, here is where I want everyone to make their suggestions as to a few places they would like to go. Try and keep it to the PA., NJ, area, for now. We are going to take everyones suggestions, and then pick a couple from each person....and then our geography master John will help us map out the trip in the most logical way, since he knows more about that stuff then the rest of us I assume.

As of right now, it is 7 (possibly 8) of us going. So we will need two cars. I am volunteering to drive, for the simple fact that I think I'm a control freak, and also I feel like crap being a passenger for long periods of time. We need one other car at this point...any takers or givers or whatever it would be called? I am going to get an 8th person I think, just cause two full to the max cars are the way to go!

We also need at least one video camera. Everyone who wants to take their own pics should also bring their cameras. We need to get everyone to buy snacks because I think we should only try and stop for like maybe one major meal or something. We can load up on some pb&j sand. and chips and stuff like that. I was thinking if everyone spent like between $5-$10 on snacks, that would be a shit load of stuff for each car. Also, of course, whoever is driving, everyone else should chip in for gas. I think each time we need gas we just all chip in a few bucks and that will be good...that way it keeps the cost of the trip down for all of us.

My final suggestion is this...Each time we stop and get out of the car to check something new out. We should switch who is in what cars, that way we all get to chill...and if we only have one camera in one car, we all get our beautiful mugs on camera as well. Oh yeah, one more thing. We should bring pillows and blankets so that wherever we sleep (probably one hotel room) we can all sleep in there together and keep shit cheap, and it will just be hilarious that way all of us in one room. We should hit up a liquor store...haha get wasted in the hotel that night (or maybe we should keep this a sober, clean trip).

So now, everyone post your suggestions so we can get this shit all mapped out. I can't wait, this is gonna be so much freakin fun!

Ang,

I will also drive; my car seats five at the max.

I have two plans:
*Coal Country
We drive up to central Pennsylvania and visits towns in the Anthracite region. Many of the towns are from the 1800s and are interesting pockets of civilization in the relative nowhere of Appalachia. We can visit Centralia, which was a small town of 300 and is now down to about 13 year round residents. Someone back in 1962 (i think) decided it would be fun to start the town's landfill on fire. The landfill fire ignited the coal seam underground, the town was ruled inhospitable and the state moved (almost) everyone. The fire still burns today. those that remain are considered squatters. We can also visit the Whaleback, a really neat little valley with an anticline in it. South Jerseyans love to climb hills considering they're rare around here, so if you want to climb a mountain, this is for you.

*Capitol
We can drive to Perryville, MD, and take the train into Washington. We can spend the rest of the trip seeing Washington on-foot, without a car (It's not that cold in DC in December). The Perryville lot is free to park, and the train ticket into DC is $11. It'll be a little more expensive than driving (only a few bucks when you count tolls, gas and parking for two cars) and we'll be able to sit together and talk on the train. (You can take Amtrak from Philly, which will get you from there to DC in two hours compared to five, but that's close to $100 per person for a round trip.)

Depending on whether or not my student loan gets in before Christmas, I might have a laptop, and I'd like to get a digital camcorder exactly for things like this.

These are just two suggestions for you. You're running the trip, but if these ideas sound good, let me know: I'll make up maps and such and figure out how to get there and back.

YO! I HAVE A MOTHERFUCKING GPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SHOULD WE BRING IT OR ARE ALL Y"ALL THE TYPE WHO LIKE TO GET LOST?!?!?!?! I"M YELLING CUZ I HAVE A HEMMOROID!
THANK YOU!

Posted by: Stebssssssss at December 6, 2004 02:32 PM

Damn. I vote you bring that sucker...along with one of those donut pillows to sit on.

Posted by: kate at December 6, 2004 02:53 PM

One of the many reasons why i LOVE stebs. one problem though, yes the info about the GPS was relevant, but you were supposed to add some other stuff too. What the hell happened? or did the hemoroid throw off your thinking? Lets get back on topic here people.

Posted by: angela at December 6, 2004 02:57 PM

If I have the laptop, I plan on getting one of those USB GPS antennas and attaching it to the roof of the car to map where we go.

Stebs, you should still bring it. I have plenty of coordinates to put in your GPS if we go to coal country. (That sounds really dirty)

if i had to vote on one of the two places you showed pics of...i would pick centralia. not that we need to pick only one. im just saying. find some scary stuff for us to look at. we are all like into that stuff too.

Posted by: angela at December 6, 2004 04:02 PM

The Whaleback and Centralia are about a half-hour apart. We can go see Centralia (which isn't that much) and then go to the Whaleback.

How about Centralia the first night (it'll be dark) and the Whaleback the next morning? We can climb around and have some fun outside. Trust me, you can spend about an hour at Centralia, but you could spend a couple hours climbing around the Whaleback. We can also go find some other places to climb and what not.

Don't be afraid about climbing, though- many of the places aren't steep slopes. It's a gentle uphill kind of climb. And I know of one place where you can climb up and find all sorts of fossils. When I was there before, I found a fossil of tree bark that's about 300 million years old.

Posted by: John at December 6, 2004 04:19 PM

By the way, fossils are creepy. Let's go!

Posted by: John at December 6, 2004 04:31 PM

I'm cool with the whole wonders of the land and shit, but i am afraid the geography lover in you is gonna take it a bit too far. yes, we will check the stuff out...but the whole point of the trip started out as a whole ghost hunt, freak you out and get scared kinda thing. but yes, we can throw a little bit of nature/land loving stuff in too. just don't be goin all ape shit on us now. we want to be spooked the hell out...although your obsession of rocks is quite spooky i must say!

Posted by: angela at December 6, 2004 05:22 PM

I'm up for going wherever. I don't need to be scared, creeped out, etc. I just don't want the law on my ass. That's my only "condition". Everything else is fair game. I'll keep looking for places though, just to make it harder for everyone to decide on where to go :P'

Posted by: kate at December 7, 2004 12:24 PM

Here are me and adriennes suggestions combined.

The devils tree in Bernards Township, NJ. Menlo abandoned Mental Institution, in Menlo Park, an abandoned hospital in Caldwell, NJ, an old haunted railway called Hookerman. I think it runs through Flanders and Chester, NJ, and an extra one if we had time or it was near anything else we were going to see would be Buds Grave, in Highlands, not far from Sandy Hook, in NJ.

Give me some feedback people. Tell me your suggestions on any of these places or whatever.

Posted by: angela at December 7, 2004 12:43 PM

You know what's REALLY creepy in PA? THE AMISH! They are so pale and out of date, I often think of them as creepy living ghosts. We should go stare at them and try to get pictures of them (which may be a challenge in itself), and then sell them as ghost pictures.

Posted by: kate at December 8, 2004 09:08 AM

WHAT ELSE AM I SUPPOSED TO YELL ABOUT?!?!?!
TROOOOOOGDOOOOOR!!!!

midgetville- finally, a place for kate and i to live

pet cemetery- i can bring bell (my current dog) and bury her next to rex (dog of christmas's's's's past)

Controversial Development Plan Threatens Beloved Weird NJ Landmark – The Evil Clown of Middletown-
let's go there before it's destroyed

I'LL RESEARCH MORE LATER! ALL OF THIS YELLING IS MAKING ME TIRED! GOOD AFTERNOON!

Posted by: stebssssssss at December 8, 2004 02:28 PM

Stebs, your out of control, and i love it! the midgetville comment ruled! Your def. in my car for some of the trip so we can sing some more. Do some more research, and get robs butt on here too...since he said he had ideas, and has yet to comment on what they are. We need to gets ta plannin! Getting excited...time for a countdown, 18 days until we go, go, go!

Posted by: angela at December 8, 2004 03:20 PM

I have always wanted to take pics of the Amish, the only problem is, if they saw us, it would like ruin their lives, they have this thing with pics and such, buttt..i have a crazy telephoto lens that i dont need to use the flash for..hehehehe. steph said she had some ideas too, so she needs to get her hiney hole on this biatch commenting too...

Posted by: angela at December 8, 2004 03:22 PM

She's avoiding NRD entirely me thinks :P'

Posted by: kate at December 8, 2004 03:39 PM

There will be no more comments about my hiney hole, thank you very much. Also, I don't come to NRD anymore because no one was updating and there was nothing for me to do. Here are my suggestions:
1. Greystone Park Insane Asylum in Morris Plains, NJ where Woody Guthrie was committed in 1956.
2. Abandoned chapel on an island on Lake Kinnelon that is haunted by the "Purple Bishop"
3. The haunted Burlington County Prison Museum
4. Morristown Pauper's graveyard
5. "Thursday's Child" in Salem County
6. Berry's Chapel in Quinton, NJ
7. Gravity Hill in Jackson
8. Menantico Sandwash, Menantico Colony, both in good old V-Town

Also, this is for a later date, but the Cape May Haunted Tour would be a nice thing to do in mid-May once we all get done school and stuff. It's only $10 and I think it'd be interesting. But yeah, all these ideas came from pretty much one issue of Weird NJ and I think they're all pretty much close by except for one or two. Not all of them are haunted though. Okay, wait, they're all haunted. Sorry. I don't know of anything else I'd like to see in NJ that's not haunted. Also, in PA, I think going to Gettysburg might be cool, but I don't know if we'd have time to fit it in. Those are my suggestions. Have fun.

Posted by: Steph at December 8, 2004 08:58 PM

You don't come here anymore cause we don't want you here.

(ps stfu plz k thx)

Posted by: John at December 8, 2004 09:05 PM

A.) The Cape May Haunted tour is lame. If you want to see it though, don't pay. Just follow the crowd around from a distance for the first few places, and then join in like you were there all along. That's what people did when I went on the tour. But even then, there are a bunch of local weirdos who come up and either laugh at you for going on the tour or tell you it's all fake or some other BS like that. And you don't even go into any of the places that are supposedly haunted. You just look at them from the outside. Overall lame deal.

B.) I was looking into Gettysburg, but apparently it's their off season because nothing seems to be available to do in December. The most we could do is hit up the haunted taverns, but I don't know how many inns we could stay at, plus we couldn't exactly all sneak into the same room as easily as we could in a hotel/motel sort of deal. Unless maybe they have hotels around there. I didn't check into that because I'm lazy, and yet not.

C.) I like shooting down ideas better than coming up with my own...can't you tell. MUWAHAHAHAHAHAAAAH

Posted by: kate at December 9, 2004 12:00 AM

I am supposed to see Stebs tonight, (as well as adrienne and steph) i must first help him apply some cream to his burning itcy a-hole, and then after i do that, we will discuss the ideas together for a bit. I will post on here what we come up with....damn rob for not posting yet. Thats it, i'm yelling at him once again. I tried threatening him yesterday for something else, it seemed to work. Let me try that again. My guess is he will post today by the time I get through with him. HAHAHA!! Alright, so once we discuss tonight, I will post all our all time fave choices, and john and kate you do the same...and then john you can map that shit out, and get your freakin rocks off for as long as it will take you to do so!

Posted by: angela at December 9, 2004 08:47 AM

All of my threatening Rob and this is what I got:
DOGroove: I'm cool with whateva
Angelaril25: on no
Angelaril25: i thought you had ideas
Angelaril25: you dont have any?
Angelaril25: even stebs posted a few ideas, along with talking about his hemroids
DOGroove: brain is completely empty
DOGroove: hehe
Angelaril25: alright
DOGroove: oh yea?
DOGroove: I gota check that out
Angelaril25: if you have time to check it out
DOGroove: I'll post something tomorrow afternoon
Angelaril25: you have time to at least post and say you dont know what to do
Angelaril25: alright
DOGroove: ha
Angelaril25: i talked about you on there

Posted by: angela at December 9, 2004 08:57 AM

Rob is my new hemmoroid.

Posted by: stebssssss at December 9, 2004 01:23 PM

we have so much in common, he's mine too! so me and adrienne are excited about seein ya stebsy...thats my new nickname for ya. we want to talk about our trip.

love,
fupa riley :)

Posted by: angela at December 9, 2004 01:30 PM

Alright, so after a very brief discussion last night between me, adrienne, rob, stebs and steph (mainly because i got wasted and spent about an hour sitting still trying not to puke) the consensus is, we want the majority of the trip to be searching for scary stuff, for instance, asylums, and haunted stuff.

Stebs has his heart set on midgetville, although its like impossible to find, but he thinks he will be reunited with long lost relatives or something. (him and kate) so, i think at this point we can start mapping this shit out. if anyone else comes up with anything we will just have to try and add it in.

lets do it to it john, go ahead...get your rocks off.

specifics would be nice

Posted by: John at December 10, 2004 10:58 AM

K..first thing, you better go john, i told everyone you were going. secondly, i already told kate this, but i will say it again here, all the places that have been posted, from everyone. they are all the suggestions. we dont know what would be doable cause we dont know where exactly things are in relation to eachother. so you take you and kates suggestions, along with me, adrienne, steph, and stebs...and if we can just try and figure out which ones we can do, and in which order that you think would be the most logical.

i tried to put towns in every one that i listed, and all of mine are in nj. so, you and kate chose the PA stuff cause no one else seems to have any suggestions for there. we are all cool or down with anything, so its not like a big deal. i just know that everyone definately wanted to do some creepy/scary stuff.

i was telling kate we should all just talk about it tomorrow. all being, me you and her. and then once we decide how many places we can fit in and what not, then we can figure out where to go first and so on and so forth. so please dont let me hear this whole not wanting to come stuff....that makes me sad, and we need/want you guys. get ahold of me tomorrow when we can figure stuff out.

Posted by: angela at December 11, 2004 04:56 PM

Alright, here are the top so many choices. I took a few ideas from each person who commented. If we need more, then we can just randomly pick things that will fit in with whatever we chose I guess.

1. Coal Country, Whaleback, Centralia. All in PA.

2. Devils Tree(Bernards Towns., NJ), Menlo Park abandoned Mental Institution (Caldwell, NJ), Hookerman Haunted Railway (runs through Flanders and Chester NJ)

3. Eveil Clown of Middletown

4. Abandoned Chapel on Lake Kinnelon, Thursdays Child in Salem County, Berrys Chapel, Quinton NJ.

See what you can come up with from those. If you need more take them from everyones previous suggestions.

Posted by: angela at December 12, 2004 10:38 AM

I don't like #4. Everything there is too close to home. Unless you want to do one big huge South Jersey trip.

#2 I think the institution might not be that easy to get to. I'll look into it (Menlo Park is about 15 minutes from me)

I'll come up with a few other trips. We need to go see some mountains people from south jersey don't understand mountains we need mountains

Posted by: John at December 12, 2004 10:44 AM

I agree with getting out of south jersey, elevation is always nice. I will go anywhere, I can bring my digital camera also, i can always use more random pictures of stebs making weird faces. I will talk to some people today about scary places in northern NJ, and get back later. Oh, also, the best ghost tour ive ever been on was in Williamsburg, VA, the ones in ocean city, and new brunswick, were pretty lame.

Nice, other people interested in this crazy shit. I was thinking of buying a site for streaming videos and hitting every eerie spot to date. Problem is, I'd probably need a crew. I'm not planning on doing anything just yet. It'll probably be next year sometime. However, If anyone on here is insterested in responding, realize the responsibilities and consiquences of hittin these so called "Shit your pants scary spots" a buddy of mine went to a one in North Jersey. Got beat up by some people in a cult. I know for a fact i can take care of myself. What about you? Interested Email xxxhardcorechicoxxx@yahoo.com

Don't waste your time with the menlo park asylum, cuz they tore it down. I used to go there all the time, it's the scariest place on fuckin earth.

Posted by: Dan at May 15, 2005 09:56 PM

hey! since it looks like you are really into finding scary things, i was wondering if you happen to know how to get to the abandoned mental hospital in menlo park. my friends and i really want to go but we have no idea where its located!
